Stamp point 145 / Schmidts – Monument

Schmidts-Denkmal (607 m above sea level) is located between the Polsterberg parking lot near Clausthal-Zellerfeld and Kammschlacken.

It commemorates the royal military police officer August Schmidt, who was attacked by two poachers on June 2, 1849 and backstabbed with an axe. Seriously injured, Schmidt dragged himself to Kammschlacken, where he succumbed to his injuries eight days later. However, Schmidt had recognized one of the poachers by the peculiar color of his skin and so the „Yellow Waggoner“ was executed by the sword in Göttingen on 28 May 1850.

The memorial to August Schmidt’s colleagues and friends was erected on the site of the tragic attack.

The shortest hiking trail leads from the Polsterberg parking lot along the wide forest road and then follow the signs to the right to the monument.
