Stamp point 157 / Kappellenfleck

The Kapellenfleck is located between Braunlage and Wieda, directly on the Kaiserweg.

According to a surviving document, the Count of Scharzfeld donated a chapel in the Harz forest to Walkenried Monastery in 1297. During excavation work in the 19th century, a church-like ground plan was uncovered on the site of today’s chapel site, which is probably the chapel mentioned.

Today’s hiking trail runs through the remains of a rampart and ditch, which may have belonged to the chapel. The chapel was probably also used as a rest stop for travelers looking for a place to camp for the night. It is also possible that a changing station was set up here for draught animal teams coming up from the southern Harz.

From the „Lausebuche“ forest parking lot on the B 27 below Braunlage, the Kaiserweg leads directly to the Kapellenfleck and on to Wieda.
