The Altarklippen (516 m above sea level) are located between Hahnenklee and Wolfshagen, above the Granestausee lake.

From the wooded cliff, you can enjoy a unique view over the Granetalsperre.
There is no certainty as to why the Altar Cliff got its name. It is assumed that Bishop Altfrid of Hildesheim (approx. 800 to 874), whose family owned estates in the foothills of the Harz Mountains, held services on the Altar Cliff to convert the pagan population of the Harz Mountains to the Christian faith.
The best starting point to get to the Altarklippe without any major differences in altitude is the public parking lot in the climatic health resort of Hahnenklee. From there, follow the signposted hiking trails via the Rolle crossroads to the Altarklippe.
