Stamp point 184 / Bear monument

The bear memorial is located on the wooded Ramberg massif between Mägdesprung and Friedrichsbrunn above the Krebsbach valley.

The bear monument marks the spot where the last bear was killed in the Anhalt Forests in 1696. The monument is an erratic boulder to which a cast-iron plaque with the following inscription has been attached:
„The last bear in the Anhalt Forests was shot here at the end of the seventeenth century.“

Between 1786 and 1788, the waggoner Buchtekirch brought down the last bear in the entire Harz Mountains near Wernigerode. He received a reward of a good two Reichstalers from the Count of Stolberg-Wernigerode for his efforts.

From Bremer Teich HWN 196, you can reach the site via the signposted forest path and continue the hike to Teufelsmühle HWN 189 or Bergrat-Müller-Teich HWN 190.
