This highly ferruginous spring was discovered in 1926 by senior miner W. Bock (1858–1933) and is located above the valley of the „Schmalen Wipper“ on the Wipperberg.

Neudorf has been a recognized and popular vacation resort since 1910. The village lies on a high plateau around 440 m above sea level in the headwaters of the Schmaler Wipper. The „Stahlquelle“ was developed for tourism in 1931 and contributed to Neudorf’s good reputation as a resort.
The Neudorf Mining Trail, which presents over 600 years of mining history in the Neudorf mining district over a distance of around 15 km, takes you over the so-called Menschentrappe to the steel spring. The Dankerode butter women are said to have walked along this steep hollow path on their way back from Quedlinburg market.
The mining nature trail continues via the Teufelsteich pond, the Fürst-Viktor hut, the Birnbaum pond, the Hellergrund water art facility HWN 194, to the Glasebach show mine HWN 175.
If you only want to hike to the Stahlquelle, you can start the tour from the small parking lot on the road from Neudorf to Dankerode.
