The Peterstein (465 m above sea level) is located between Wernigerode and Elbingerode above the Zillierbach dam. The Peterstein is a good place to relax with a view over the dam.

In earlier times, the Zillierbach supplied many mills as far as Halberstadt, where it changed its name to Holtemme. However, it was responsible for many floods in Wernigerode, especially in spring after the snow melted. It was therefore decided to build a dam at this point in 1931 for flood protection and drinking water supply.
During excavation work for this dam, a consecration find from the Bronze Age was made, which is exhibited in the local history museum of the town of Wernigerode.
The name Peterstein refers to the forest behind it, the „Peterholz“. In earlier times, this piece of forest belonged to the Ilsenburg Benedictine monastery of St. Peter, from which the current name of the forest and rock is derived.
A good starting point for a hike to the Peterstein is the hiking parking lot in Drei Annen Hohne. From there, simply follow the Zillierbach stream to the dam and continue along the signposted path to Peterstein.
