The Wendefurth dam is located between Blankenburg and Hasselfelde above the B 81.

Blue lake surrounded by green forests

The dam is part of the Bodewerk multifunctional facility. It is used for flood protection, low water elevation, power generation and is also the lower reservoir for the pumped storage plant.

The upper reservoir on the Kohlenberg has a storage capacity of 2 million cubic meters. If the power stations have a shortage of electricity, the water from the upper reservoir is fed to the turbines via two 3.4 m diameter downpipes and 80 megawatts of electricity can be generated. If, on the other hand, the power stations have a surplus, the water is pumped back into the upper basin.

At the same time, the Wendefurth dam is also used for local recreation and Harz tourism. The floating restaurant „Zum Hecht“ offers boat hire as well as raft trips with catering.

Adrenaline addicts can whizz through the air attached to a double rope at a height of 120 meters and a length of 1 km on the dam wall or walk down the 43-meter-high dam wall roped up.

The parking lot can be reached directly from the B 81 through Wendefurth. Cross the dam wall and follow the Harzer Hexenstieg trail to the Talsperrenblick viewpoint with the stamp box. From here you have an outstanding view of the reservoir and the pumped storage plant.
