The sand caves in Heers are located north-east below Regenstein Castle and Fortress.

The Heers is a large forest area between Blankenburg and Halberstadt, consisting mainly of pine trees. This area was named after the Heerstraße, an important road that ran through the forest in earlier times.
The sand caves, or „Die Sandhutsche“ as the Blankenburg locals call them, are an impressive discovery in the middle of the pine forest for any first-time visitor. The many small rocks and sandy sections of path are already noticeable on the way there, but the „Sandhutsche“ with its rocks up to three meters high and the caves carved into the stone by humans exceeds all expectations.
This fascinating landscape was already chosen as a meeting place by the ancient Germanic tribes and has lost none of its magical attraction to this day.
The sand caves were voted the most beautiful stamp site by our stamp hikers in 2009.
The starting point for a visit is the signposted parking lot below the castle, which is easily accessible from the A36. It is a good idea to first walk along the narrow, signposted path to the left of the parking lot to the Regensteinmühle HWN 82. Afterwards, you will reach the sand caves in the Heers on the right-hand side via Heerstraße below the Regensteinmühle. From the sand caves, several marked paths lead up to Regenstein Castle and Fortress HWN 80.
