The Südharzer Dampflok Steig winds its way through the Südharz nature park for almost 42 kilometers. It overcomes a good 2000 meters in altitude, offers some fascinating views of the Harz foreland and passes through the pleasant mixed deciduous forests in northern Thuringia.

The stage from Neustadt to Nordhausen takes you through the unique southern Harz karst landscape with a Mediterranean flair. In contrast to the other two stages of the Südharzer Dampflok Steig, the route runs mainly through open, wide open spaces. There is little forest, but you will see a huge wooden steam locomotive, an oak tree that is more than 600 years old and a landscape reminiscent of Tuscany in Italy.

From Neustadt, follow the red signs with the white steam locomotive to the Galgenberg, where the Harz wooden steam locomotive invites you to rest with a view of the Hohnstein ruins and the Harz forests.
