The Schindelkopf (550 m above sea level) is located to the southwest of the Acker mountain range and the town of Osterode am Harz to the west.

From the Schindelkopf, which is part of the Osterode town forest, you can see parts of the Sösetalsperre reservoir. You also have a beautiful view of Osterode and the southern Harz foreland.
In earlier times, charcoal burners lived in such huts when they worked in the Harz forests in summer. The charcoal burners could not leave their place of work as the charcoal piles required supervision day and night. In this traditional style, the shelter at the Schindelkopf was built in 2002, where the stamp box is also located.
The Sösetalsperre was the first dam built by the Harzwasserwerke on the River Söse between 1928 and 1931 and is used to supply drinking water, protect against flooding, raise low water levels and generate electricity.
The shortest signposted hiking trail to the Schindelkopf starts from the Waldvogelstation at the Sösetalsperre reservoir, above the hiking parking lot.
From the hiking parking lot „Fuchshaller Weg“ on the outskirts of Osterode, you can hike along the „Nassen Weg“ to the Köte am Schindelkopf and continue the tour to Hanskühnenburg HWN 144.
