Stamping station 100 / Ebersburg

The ruins of Ebersburg Castle (410 m above sea level) are located on a hilltop projecting to the south to the north of Hermannsacker.

The castle was probably built between 1181 and 1183. In 1199, Heinrich von Eversberch appears as a marshal of the Landgrave of Thuringia. In 1216, the landgrave issues a document on the Ebersburg.

The ground plan of the main castle is a displaced rectangle, approx. 45 x 60 m in size. The mighty, round keep with a diameter of 12.7 m and a wall thickness of 4.5 m is located in the inner courtyard. The castle is divided into the outer and lower castle, as well as the upper castle with palas and keep.

After 1587, the castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair. The castle ruins are now being preserved by the „Association for the Living Middle Ages“

A good starting point is the parking lot at the Gasthaus zur Sägemühle, which can be reached from Hermannsacker.
